This hospital is the only facility in Munster equipped with CT and MRI capabilities and operates as a dedicated referral hospital with 24-hour care. We were grateful to use their conference room, which allowed attendees to join both in person and via Zoom.

Just over 40 participants attended, with around 10 joining in person, creating a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for the session.

The seminar focused on Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), a serious condition affecting some flat-faced breeds, particularly Pugs, Bulldogs, and French Bulldogs, though it is not exclusive to these breeds. Importantly, not all dogs of these breeds are affected.

With Crufts approaching, the topic was especially relevant. Listed breeds must pass the Respiratory Grading Scheme, developed by the Royal Kennel Club and Cambridge University, before their entry is accepted. In Ireland, this scheme is also recognised, with these breeds granted provisional IKC registration until assessed, helping breeders produce healthier puppies.

We were fortunate to welcome Susan Murphy, a European Board Certified Specialist in Veterinary Surgery, who completed her surgical internship and ECVS small animal surgery residency at the renowned Fitzpatrick Referrals. Susan is an internationally respected surgeon specializing in orthopaedics and neurosurgery, and her expertise brought great value to the evening.

Her presentation was excellent, followed by an in-depth Q&A session, where she demonstrated a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by reputable breeders and the importance of promoting a positive image for pedigree dogs.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to working with Veterinary Specialists Cork to host further seminars on prevalent health issues in pedigree dogs.
